I have been feeding now for 5 months and I would be lying if I said it was totally easy. I found the first 6 weeks really difficult and when I first started out at the hospital, I was literally sat for hours with a syringe, collecting drops.
There have been ups and downs with my milk supply over the past few months and I am desperate not to give up. After the initial 6 weeks of struggling, my supply has been mostly regular but occasionally it has been low. What has worked for me in the past has been taking 5 Fenugreek Seeds daily (and then stop taking them when milk has been back to normal)
This past week, I know that my son has been really hungry as he has been waking through the night and is usually quite a good sleeper. Along with putting heating on through the night to make sure he is warm, I was up 4/5 times feeding- until I started to give him formula milk. This is how I know that he is definitely hungry and that no matter how many times I am feeding him in the day, the supply doesn’t seem to be enough.
So… I did a little research and basically want to share this with you incase you are struggling, or know anybody else that is struggling. I found a really good website, which you can access by clicking here!
It recommends that for young babies under six months old to avoid giving them formula, but I know myself that this past week has been very stressful with a young hungry baby who hasn’t been his complete self. So, I will continue to give him 4-5 oz of formula milk so that he is not hungry, then feed him myself. This way, I am still producing milk on a regular basis and where possible, I will do this from home- as recommended on the website, skin to skin is best in order for the body to produce the hormones that help support milk supply. I am also making sure that I drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and I will continue to take the Fenugreek Seeds.
I have also started to make my own foods for baby so keep your eyes on the blog if this interests you!
