As you may or may not know, I don’t like to use plastic. I am particular about the Tupperware we use in our home, because I don’t like holding foods and beverages in plastic.
The Dangers of Plastics
Most plastics contain endocrine disrupting chemicals, such as Bisphenol-A (which is known as BPA). This causes estrogen mimicking properties in the body. I don’t particularly like plastic containers for my shampoo and conditioner either but I guess you can’t have it all!
Anyhow, if I were to start again, I’d avoid it for baby bottles too! Even though most baby bottles are BPA free, there is other research to suggest that plastics can still cause harm (I will need to add a separate post for this later down the line). BPA free products may contain chemicals that are even more harmful. Make sure you check your plastics!
- Phthalates– linked to immune system suppression and hormone problems
- BPS and BPF– Bisphenol-S or Bisphenol-F have similar (and possibly worse) hormone mimicking and disrupting properties and are often found in BPA free products
- Polyvinylchloride– linked to cancer and birth defects
Even the micro beads in facial scrubs and toothpastes are causing problems. So much so, come 2017, they will be banned. Predominantly used as an exfoliator, these tiny micro beads are a problem. Ten and thousands of tiny plastic particles are washed down the sink and end up in the oceans. These are swallowed by the fish too and end up in the food chain! Companies like Asda, Avon, the Bodyshop, L’Oreal and Boots have stated that they will not use them in their own brand products. Russia, America and Canada have banned micro beads.
And so, not only is it safer to use glass, foods and beverages also TASTE a whole lot better. They are easier to keep cool as well!
